I joined an enthusiastic audience for the opening of the musical */Fela!/* at
the Ahmanson Theatre. *Sahr Ngaujah* was riveting as the Nigerian singer and
musician responsible for creating the 60s Afro-Beat music that seeded today's
Hip Hop beats. It took a few minutes for the crowd to buy into the audience
participation required of us as attendees at Fela Anikulapo-Kuti's concert at
the Shrine in Lagos, Nigeria, on the eve of the singer's departure for
America, but eventually everyone was on their feet trying to follow the dance
instruction. Pounding Tony-award-winning dance numbers alternate with Fela's
contemplative storytelling and audience ribbing, working the crowd like a
